Prevent recovery of deleted files from usb drives and external SSDs
it is commonly known that deleted files or formatted drives can be recovered by free data recovery software, and it is also a common wisdom that you cannot get back deleted files on SSDs because of the TRIM command in SSDs. But did you know that TRIM command only works in internal SSDs, not external SSDs or USB flash drives or SD cards?
Recover deleted files from internal solid-state drives is impossible.
Recover deleted files from traditional mechanical hard drives data is easy since the data recovery programs only need to find the traces of deleted files and recover them, but they cannot find any traces left in internal SSDs, because when the delete operation is performed in SSDs, TRIM will clean the sectors immediately, which is why you can't recover anything from internal SSDs.
That's to say, external hard drives or USB-like storage devices, are just the same vulnerable to file recovery attacks. You can use any free programs like Recuva to re-appear files deleted from USB drives. We need to do more than just Quick format, needless to mention format will not help; besides, always format USB will shorten its service life. Bear in mind to do this one more step especially when you want to donate or sell old computers or get rid of USBs.
Erase to secure data
Erase is to overwrite the sectors and make them empty of nothing, it is a way of cleaning traces of previous data, and it is also the secure way to protect data from recovery solutions. Now connect the USB drives or external SSDs to the computer and download ByebyeData Eraser, we're gonna say goodbye to old data with the following steps:
1 Run ByebyeData Eraser as Administrator (Right-click on the icon and choose run as administrator and click Yes to the UAC dialog.)
2 Click Erase disk and check all the USB drives and external SSDs boxes, Yes, in ByebyeData Eraser you can multi-check disks to erase.
3 In the security column, you can specify one type of wiping method to erase sensitive data. We have four types and 14 methods at total, most of them are government standards of different counties. What're the differences between all the wiping standards? Click to learn more.
4Click Erase Now and click Yes when Eraser asks for your permission.
When using Erase disk function to clean USBs, they will display as unallocated space in Disk management, Drive letter, label, files and folders, everything in them is erased. If you want to keep Drive letter and Drive label of the external hard drives and USBs, you can use Erase free space function after you deleted all the files in them. Besides, in ByebyeData Eraser you can add individual files or folder to erase instead of the entire drive to save you time if you just want to clean out certain files.
