HDD eraser software suggestion
I have an external drive that I no longer need and would like to comletely (completely ) erase all the data. I could reformat but that dose not completely erase the data. The erase apps I've seen have all been intended to erase the C: drive and don't appear to have an option for an external drive. Any suggestions?
Seven forums user Bill would like to ask how to completely erase all data on external hard drive, just like the tutorial page how to erase Samsung portable hard drive days ago. Actually, we do have some suggestions on how to choose HDD eraser software:
1. Better be graphically designed.
We can find some powerful eraser software like Dban, SDelete and Ciphter, they did a great job in erasing disks, drives or individual files, but in command-line way, sometimes, we need to pay more attention to the list of drives of files so that we don't erase the items we want to keep. That being said, we still made mistakes, what's worse, we can't recovery any of them after erased. Thus, the well graphically designed eraser program shall be our first choice.
2. Multiple erasing standards.
There're tens of erasing standards available around the world and many countries have their own theory of data sanitations. In the US, we have U.S. National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (DoD 5220.22-M) while New Zealand requires New Zealand Government Communications Security Bureau NZSIT 402 to ensure data secure. You can find other standards in different countries here.
3. Able to create bootable media.
Although there is no need to create such media when wiping external hard drives, the data sanitation software you're looking for shall be well functioned, to create bootable CD/DVD is a must-have feature, in case you would like to erase everything on the computer in the future. Bootable media can be a blank CD/DVD, or an empty USB or any external hard drives/SSDs.
