Hard drive wipe utility with DoD standards
Hard drive wipe utility ByebyeData Eraser built-in with DoD 5220.22-M and DoD 5220.22-M (ECE) standards, free DoD equipped software. DoD refers to Department of Defense. DoD 5220.22-M is the data sanitation standard of US DoD, using 3 passes overwriting, which DoD 5220.22-M (ECE) uses 7 passes to overwrite hard drive.
Tim from lifewire tells us more about DoD 5220.22-M's 3 passes:
- Pass 1: Writes a zero and verifies the write
- Pass 2: Writes a one and verifies the write
- Pass 3: Writes a random character and verifies the write
And DoD 5220.22-M(ECE) is a seven pass overwriting wipe standard:
- Pass 1and 2: Write certain bytes and with its compliment.
- Pass 3 and 4: Write random character.
- Pass 5 and 6: Write character and its complement.
- Pass 7: Writes a random character.
In ByebyeData Eraser, the 3-pass DoD standard belongs to the Advanced overwriting methods along with other 4 standards, while the 7-pass DoD goes to the Complex overwriting catalog. See the screenshot below.
ByebyeData Eraser supports multiple data sanitization methods in additions to DoD wiping methods, like GOST, US Army AR, US Air Force, RCMP, German Standard, Bruce Schneier and Peter Gutmann's algorithm.
Is DoD wiping method necessary?
Well, the default overwrite plan: zero-filling is actually enough to prevent data recovery and it's also widely used by home users before the sell their computer or reinstall operating system.
But, some users mailed to us and gave us information that their IT department requires DoD 3 passes to overwrite hard drive, they just have rules about data cleaning.
So if you're a home user, choose simple overwrite method, it's more time saving than advanced plans; if you're a business user or the administrator of a company, follow its laws or rules, you can also contact us if our erasing methods are not in the list of your company, we can improve Eraser.
How long will DoD methods take?
Speed of overwriting mainly relies on the size and speed of hard drive.
A 250G 7200 RPM hard drive for example, DoD 5220.22-M 3-pass will take about 5.5 hours (5 hours, 35 minutes on WD Caviar SE 16, 250GB, 7200 RPM) while it only takes 1 hour and 20 minutes with the Zero filling methods.
Laptop's hard drive always equips with 5400 RPM drives, it will cost more than 6 hours to erase a 250G HDD.
However, ByebyeData Eraser Free Edition is also able to erase files and folders, if you have some files to erase and you want to apply the DoD methods, this function is the best option to erase private data clean and save time.
